Laura Hunt is a Senior Architect with the Architecture Department, eThekwini Municipality, Durban, South Africa with 25 years’ experience in the fields of housing and development within the metro area as a practitioner and academic. Laura is responsible for the implementation of major new public works for the City of Durban as well as conceptualising projects which pilot greater transversal cooperation between different government departments, and ensring alignment with other city initiatives including the recently adopted City Resilience Strategy.
On graduating in 1990 Laura joined the Built Environment Support Group (BESG), an NGO active in community development in the province of KwaZulu Natal, and instrumental in articulating and promoting the constitutional right to adequate housing.
In 2010, Laura prepared a comprehensive housing typologies study which explores issues of density and sustainability in the context of subsidised housing - This research has informed improved human settlements planning, and increasingly compact neighbourhoods with integrated and aligned social facilities are beginning to be realised as a result.
Laura holds a Master of Science degree in Urban Housing Management from the Institute for Housing and Development Studies, Erasmus University (Netherlands).
